Big Family Dinner

Yesterday was a whirlwind of activity (which seems to be how my life is lately), but all went well. After my morning at Lori's school getting my lovely facial (my face was as soft as a baby's butt) I ran to the grocery store and then home to make 2 desserts for our big family dinner. Whitney and I made a very tasty Oreo Ice Cream Dessert, then I made Amie's famous Gooey Chex Mix Dessert because not everyone loves the mint in the oreo dessert. Whitney was in heaven because she loves helping in the kitchen and because we got to eat several oreos along the way.

Oreo Ice Cream Dessert
Ingredients:
Large size bag of Oreos (use all but one row)
1/2 cup of butter
Mint Ice Cream (set out to soften on the counter while preparing the other items)
Chocolate syrup (optional)

Directions:
Crush 2 rows of oreos in a large ziploc bag then mix with 1/2 cup melted butter. Thoroughly combine the two either in the bag or in a bowl then spread into a 9x13 pan (don't press down too hard), then place pan in the freezer for a few minutes to let it harden up a bit.

Take the softened mint ice cream and spread the entire half gallon over the oreos. (You can put chocolate syrup over this if you have it.) Let this freeze for awhile then add a layer of cool whip to the top, add chocolate syrup and some more crushed oreos then cover and freeze until you're ready to eat it.

This is a shot of my front seat as I drove out to my parents' house. The lid wouldn't fit on the container with the gooey chex mix so I had an open bowl of it next to me in the car. Needless to say, the lid would have fit by the time I got out to Eagle Mountain!

This is a scene from the chaos in the kitchen at my parents' house. They have a big house, but the kitchen isn't super large so when we're all together we're butt-to-butt in there. Somehow having Robyn's family here again seems to have doubled the number of bodies and noise. It's crazy, but it definitely feels more complete.

My mom made jammie pants for all the cousins so we were trying to get a decent photo of this crazy group. It was no easy task, but this is the best one. Of course, now I see that you can't see any of the bottom row's jammie pants! Good grief. Click here for more photos of the night. At one point the kids were playing in the garage and Austin was "swinging a bat wildly" and hit Landon's pinky finger, now it's all swollen and sore. I tapped it to the finger next to it, but I'm wondering if all you doctor's wives and nurses can tell me if I need to take him in or if the doctor will just say there's nothing he can do.

After the crazy photo shoot with the kids, the adults played Boggle. My mom's game is vintage at this point, I think it's from 1983. It's surprisingly fun to play that game, and it's always surprising when we find a game my dad will play too.

**When was your last big family gathering?
Do you enjoy playing Boggle?
Do love Amie's Gooey Chex Mix?**

Amie's Gooey Chex Mix
Ingredients:
Box of Rice Chex
Half box of Golden Grahams (secret ingredient)
2 c. coconut
8 oz. slivered almonds
Small bag of mini marshmallows

1 1/2 c. sugar
1 1/2 c. light Karo syrup
2 sticks of butter

Directions:
Spray 2 large bowls with PAM then add all the dry ingredients together in the two bowls (2 for easier mixing later)

On the stove--melt the sticks of butter, karo syrup and sugar all together. When it comes to a boil, boil for 2 minutes then pour over the dry mixture and toss until completely incorporated.
**Spread mixture onto wax paper or onto the counter sprayed with PAM. I use two wooden spoons to continue mixing it all once it's on the counter. Allow to dry out for awhile or put in a bowl to serve.

Number Of Servings:Lots
Preparation Time:15 minutes

I love big family dinners. It has been too long since my whole family has been together. I have a sister out in TX who has 4 girls--it is so far and difficult to get them clear out to Utah. Glad you could all gather--that's what it's all about, right?

So fun! I love getting together with family, craziness and all! So fun to see all the kids together! Amie's chex mix is so yummy, and once you start eating, you just can't stop!!

Poor Landon! If you think it is broken I would take him to get it x-rayed, but as long as it wiggles and is still straight he is probably ok. Have him ice it throughout the day to help with the swelling and just keep an eye on it. Sounds so painful!

We are getting together tonight with my family- I love it! The picture with all the cousins is great.

Love Boggle but can't really seem to find too many people that enjoy it. My mom has one from the 80's as well.

I have never had Amie's chex mix...it looks fabulous as does the recipe for the oreo thing.

I totally love Amie's gooey Chex mix and was happy that your bowl was too small for your batch! (Eva thanks you as well.)

I love big family dinners and they happen far too rarely for my taste. Of course, I love them much more when they're not at my house... too small and too much stress. But I could never get enough of gatherings at Denise's or my grandma's.

Speaking of Grandma, I used to play Boggle with her all the time. I can't remember the last time I played it.

Your family get together is making me so excited for mine in a week. I love when the cousins all get together and play. How fun that your mom made them all pj bottoms.

To answer your question about Landons pinkie. I asked Doug about it and he recommended going into an express med clinic just to get an x-ray of his hand. (Too bad you weren't by us--we could have gotten you in quicker) That way you are not worrying about it. He also says it could very well be injured and that he sees that happening quite often. They also may just tape it, but at least have someone look at it. (Is there anyone in your ward?) Hope his finger gets better soon. We had trauma at our house this weekend too.

Your recipes look yum--I may have to try those.

Thanks for sharing recipes. I always love recommendations. I'm sure I'd love Amie's recipe b/c I love anything with marshmallow.

We get together with our families often b/c we're not that distanced - we just have three sibs in Utah, and that's it. Everyene else is in CA, and the Utah sibs visit often.

I do love Boggle, and wish more of my family liked to play. I haven't been able to play games in a while though. The boys manage to sabotage.

I quite enjoy the Boggle and Speed Scrabble. I have a love affair with words. You'd think I would know more of them, Bah! (ha ha)

I love it when our whole family can get together like this. It doesn't happen very often though, since we all live so far away.

Looks like you all had a great time!

P.S. my parents have a vintage boggle game too. Ours has been modified with foam on the inside to keep down the noise factor. It looks kind of funny, but it works! :)

Umm with my family in Florida and Lou's in Singapore we rarely have big family gatherings. THe last time we were together with all of my family was when Kira was born. The last time we were with all of Lou's family was last Christmas. We did have Lou's parents and brother here this summer so that was fun. OH to live in a family compound... it would be so perfect.
I love the pajamas, I hope to be a grandma like that, sewing cute things for the grandkids.
Your Oreo dessert sounds oh so good. I hate chex but I imagine my little Kira would love the Chex deseret since it's one of her favorite cereals.

What a fun weekend!! (that Oreo dessert sounds killer--I love Oreos and mint ice cream so that dessert sounds like deadly combination!) I always love it when family comes in and it's crazy and hustle-bustle all the time. That's how Thanksgiving is going to be this year at our house, but I can't wait!

I've got to try that Chex mix--it sounds like it will really make my pants fit better. I love family gatherings, even with all the hubbub. I envision the Celestial Kingdom to be like one of our big, fun family gatherings--sans dishes and cleanup. Can't wait!

I love family dinners but Jeremy hates them. It's a good thing that we don't live close enough that he has to suffer through them too often. My last big family event was in May at my grandparents, with my aunts and uncles, my dad and my siter and brother. It was so much fun!

How long is Robin here? It must be fun to have her back and all of the cousins together again.

Yes, I love Amie's Rice Chex treat. It's so yummy and I'm so glad that you posted the recipe. The Oreo dessert sounds yummy too. I'll have to try that one out. Thanks for posting the recipes!
