When he finally tore himself away from the riveting reading he completely ignored me, no eye contact, no greeting, no nod of the head, nothing. The little screen they have for the consumer actually asked if the cashier greeted me, I've been hesitant to hit "no" in the past because I feared cashier-retribution, but he was so obviously shunning me that I got brave and clicked "no".
I feared he would steal one of my items or sneeze on my parcels, but he didn't (that would have been too interactive), so I swiped my debit card and finished my sale. He didn't acknowledge me once. That's weird right?
**Have you ever feared cashier retribution?

That's totally bizarre! Usually the worst you get is a clerk that says, "How are you?" but never looks at you.
yes, i totally fear cashier retribution- and i have had some seriously rude cashiers.
this guy sounds definitely odd...my little brain is working here and i wonder what's going on...
funny that he was so interested in the cereal box, though. :)
The Walmart cashiers in my town are so rude too. Most of the time they talk to each other, or to their friends that have come into the store. It really irks me. We don't have a little screen that asks any customer service questions though. Wish we did!
I have pushed that button on the pin pad too...only when deemed absolutely necessary. In this case, you were totally justified.
I've never had a cashier read the back of a cereal box, but every morning at breakfast my daughter does and it cracks me up because I do it too.
I think Walmart as a whole is terrible. It doesn't seem to matter what city I am in, there is no customer service. It's so frustrating!
I took Ry there with me last week and we spent over a half an hour-not kidding-in line. They only had 4 cashiers on. My cart was full or I would have walked out. Trying to entertain a two year old who already hates shopping was difficult. A lot of bribing took place.
That was really, really wierd... but then again it was Walmart & weird stuff happens at Walmart.
That's so weird! However, considering that this man was at WalMart. . . . I hate WalMart with a serious passion.
Sometimes at this Walmart (our only store remember) we have the opposite problem. They interact TOO much, share awkward details and give you life advice. None of which is welcome. A nice 'Hi how are you' and I would count that as a good Walmart experience.
Cashier retribution cracks me up!!
That was a strange experience, but I must say, the box does look intriguing. Once when I was checking out the cashier ripped my soda box (the 12 pack) and I asked to replace it so I could carry it. He said, "Oh, don't worry, we'll just tape it." He whipped out some packing tape, which he put on the box, but couldn't tear, so he bent down and ripped it with his teeth! I don't know about you, but I'm a little uncomfortable with someone's saliva on my food products!!!
Interesting. I have never had that particular thing happen. Most of the time I find myself asking about their day if they choose not to speak. It's that chattiness habit I suppose.
Yes, Yes, Yes. This is a common experience in my area. Very poor customer service all over...especially at WM.
I avoid WM if at all possible.
Funny thing, a few weeks ago I was in the AF WM while visiting...I left saying the cashiers here are so friendly compared to South Florida. Ha!
I have pushed that button many a time always thinking...why do they want to know...nothing ever changes.
That is weird!! I would have clicked no too, but I really don't think they would no what you click..that could be bad for the customer! I've never had a cashier read my merchandise before either.
I can totally relate. there is a really mean checker at Albertsons that I avoid like the plague. She checked me out yesterday (no one else was there!) & I was on a scooter! She glares- & it's scary.... seriously. I don't know what her deal is but I'm telling you she is ANGRY- Yesterday I needed one more bag of chocolate chips for my "10" deal, She actually rolled her eyes a little & huffed because she had to walk over & get them for me..... eeeeek I have been thinking of being Kriti-ish & bringing her a gift sometime- but she is so mean.... I just stay clear & Thank her profusely when she helps me.
walmart= no surprise there. I think all their checker are- different.
Hilarious. I've never once feared cashier retribution!
This is so funny! The fact that he stopped to read the cereal box cracks me up...and then NOT to say anything to you? Not a hi, not a comment about what he had just read....WIERD!
There is the FUNNIEST Saturday Night Live sketch about a Target cashier...it is seriously hysterical....the cashier is overly friendly and every item she scans she LOVES and runs off to find for herself. Hilarious! Cashier's can make or break your day!
I think I will respond to this since I am a Walmart Cashier.
I try to be the cashier that I want when I go through a line. I don't like a lot of chattiness, but I don't like to be shunned. I don't mind being nice and smiling and making sure that the customer is taken care. A fast speedy checkout is the greatest.
From the cashier's point of view....we see many customers a day and some are nice and some are not. We can be the nicest person in the world to someone and then get yelled at because something didn't ring up right, which is not our fault since we do not enter anything into the computer we just scan the stupid thing. People yell at us because we deny them alcohol if they are under age or don't have their ID or the price isn't marked correctly or another store has it cheaper or someone looked at them funny at somewhere else in the store or they were given the incorrect change or they simply don't understand why things have to work the way they do. Walmart is still a company that is there to make a profit and there are policies and procedures that need to be followed in order to make sure that the inventory is accurate and sometimes people don't fully understand that. Cashiers take the brunt of everything, which is how it should be. But we are still human and sometimes people forget that everyone has good and bad days. We have over 400 employees that work at just the Walmart in Murray (and that is the smalles supercenter in the state of Utah) and not all 400 employees are going to be having a good day all the time.
I work there simply because I can't afford daycare during the day and need a extra cash to help pay the bills. There are times when I don't get paid enough to put up with the crap that people give and if I could afford not to work there on some days I would. We as cashiers do not know how you answer on those questions. We get a percentage report that states how many people were satisfied. I think it is great and more people need to mark honestly since it only helps the company improve in areas.
There are good and bad people in every profession. Just remember that they are only people and maybe they are having a bad day and by being nice to them and understanding they may be nicer to you the next time you see them or they may be nicer to the next person they come in contact with. You never know the impact that you could have on someone just by being nice. But we do know the impact on someone when we are not nice
I do understand what you mean about looking at the customers groceries. There is a checker at a place that I know of that will inspect every item that she rings up simply to see if it is something she may want to buy and it gets annoying and it slows things down. That is not what I want to be remembered as.
Looking at your photo, my guess is that he wanted to be sure he could check off as many things as possible from his "Things to do before you're 18" list.
I appreciate a friendly but efficient checker--this guy sounds like neither!
I had an experience at Target with a cashier that wouldn't say hello and wouldn't answer my question. I was getting really frustrated until I saw the little dry erase board on the side that stated she was deaf to communicate with her you needed to use the board. duh - I felt so stupid. But now I try to go through her lane because she is fast and not chatty - just my kind of cashier!
Ever since my customer-meltdown at Cafe Rio, I think word has been spread to all cashiers in our area that they should fear ME. Gulp. It was ugly. But truly! The cashier was beyond rude and I'd had it.
I do, however, fear line-cook retribution. If I ever send food back while out to eat, I feel nervous.
Sheesh, how rude! (Originally I typed rude like this: roode. What's wrong with me today? But I digress...) I was a cashier at Shopko in high school, and I can't imagine not talking to a customer. It was the only interesting thing about cashiering! Of course, Shopko didn't sell cereal at the time, so there you go.
I've never thought about cashier retribution, but I am always nice to people at fast food places, even if they're morons. I don't want any nasty surprises in my lunch.
I love to hit the "no" button when I am in a filthy store and it asks "Was your store clean today?"
I have never hit the no button, but I've been tempted because of not being acknowledged at all a few times. What is up with complete ignore mode? That bothers me almost more than blatant rudeness (wel, it is a form I suppose).
Maybe he was regretting never completing that list of 18 things and was in a forelorn stupor.
I had nearly the same thing happen to me, not more than a month ago at Wal-Mart. I even said hello and thank you and she completely ignored me. Unfortunately I was never asked that question, but if I had been I would have definitely said NO!
I am laughing so hard over this one! I have NEVER had a cashier read my boxes--too funny :)
I have had lame cashiers who don't talk to me but usually only at Wal-Mart never at my local grocery store.
Ya know--it's silly but I am sometimes "afraid" of my cashier when I use coupons (what if I used the wrong one?). It's so silly because really what can that person do to me--lol. :) Nevertheless, I am also afraid of doctors and dentists and a handful of other people. Bizarre but true!
Ok, weird, yes. But you're not surprised by this, are you? I have had many of these non-interactions at walmart, but this takes the prize. How could he seriously be reading your cereal box? You are so nice about stuff like this I am surprised you even hit "no" on the screen. Good for you. Now I wonder if they actually look at those responses. Can I say again how much I dislike Walmart?!
I'm dying that he sat there reading the box. So funny!
Absolutely weird Jill! What a great customer service experience. I've never had anyone read my items before, but I have had some very, very, very slow cashiers! Very!
I once pushed the "no" and the cashier immediately looked up and said hi to me... it made me nervous that maybe it sends them a message. I have been tempted to try again to see if the same thing happens.
The fear of sneezing on your parcels made me laugh out loud! THAT would be MY fear!!!
I am glad that you were brave and pushed that button. What would have been hilarious is if a manager came zipping in at that moment.
What an odd bird for sure! Makes you wonder how he got a customer service job in the first place!
..I have never seen a screen ask such a question. Is that just at Walmart?
a girl at our wal-mart loves to tell you all about herself, things you wish you didn't have to listen to.
luckily...i shop at target (for this and many other reasons).
I don't like a lot of chattiness myself, but I always just assume they will acknowledge me in some way. I can't believe he sat there reading the box. Too funny.
I've been known to hit the 'ignore' button for fear of the cashier! how creepy was he?
