Caramel, Zookeeping and a Girl

The book club girls (sadly, minus Michelle again) met last week at Collette's house to reconnect with each other and discuss The Zookeeper's Wife.

I made caramel popcorn for the first time in a long time and forgot how long it takes (about 45 minutes), I ended up with more popcorn than caramel so I made an extra half batch of caramel to add to it which resulted in goo-rific caramel corn.

We found out Jana is going to have a baby girl! We are so excited that after 5 cute boys she will be having a darling baby girl....woohooo!! Amy had already heard the news from her husband (who's friends with Jana's husband) so she brought her this pink blanket.

Amy also brought us all something from her trip to India; she'd made these darling boxes to put the gifts in.

This is a blurry (I had lighting issues) shot of the little terra cotta lamp Amy brought us from India.

We did spend some time discussing the book and all agreed that we didn't like how it kept going in and out of story form to facts then back to story form. I have such issues with nonfiction, and didn't realize this book fell into that category until I started reading it on the plane to Paris. $#@!

We heard all about Amy's trip to India (is it wrong I have NO DESIRE to go there?), Jana's crazy household, Collette's family weekend, Jenn's husband's couponing and my trip to Paris. Good times.

**Does India appeal to you at all?
Have you read this book?
Do you make caramel popcorn very often?**

Comment Window Tidbit: I set 6 mouse traps today, 4 of them are neck crushers and 2 of them are trap door kinds that lure the mouse in and then close behind them. I'm just trying to figure out if they end up starving to death or suffocating in there though, because that's not very nice either; at least the neck crushing is fast right?

I would have like to go to India before kids but not so much now. My parents are serving a mission there right now. It is a crazy hard place to live.

I think caramel popcorn should always be made with an extra half batch of caramel- it was D.licious!

I like to think that I would be able to travel the world but I'm learning to be honest with myself, and no. I would not like to travel to India. Day flight to the Taj Mahal and back out maybe.

I would like to go. The Far East is a cultural powerhouse that we don't acknowledge enough with our western perspective. Plus, the colors. I would go just for the colors. It's so expensive though, so I don't think I'll ever make it there as it's not at the very top of my list.

I don't think India is my cup of tea...it's too crowded and hot!

I've made caramel popcorn a few times but it wasn't the greatest. I either need a better recipe or a better technique in preparing the stuff!

Caramel corn is a staple in the Wood home.

I have absolutely no desire to go to India and feel rather lame for feeling that way. Frankly, I'd rather stay home and eat caramel corn.

I must be the odd man out because I LOVED this book and its quirky jumps. And I'd LOVE to go to India, but I think you learn so incredibly much from any travel.

Yes. Fast and efficient. They don't feel a thing (at least that is what I tell myself).

Like Denise, caramel corn is a staple at our house. I have a fast recipe and a slow recipe. Half of us like fast, half like slow.

I'm trying to decide whether to read Zookeeper's Wife or pass on it. I'm struggling through two tough ones right now. What do you suggest? Pass or read?

I do have a desire to go to India, but friends who have been there tell me I shouldn't go...something about my big heart and the conditions do not mesh. ?

I haven't read the book and do not plan on reading it after your personal account. Thanks for the info.

I do not make caramel corn, but that looked so good!!!

It sounds like all of you have had a wonderful night...those boxes look really cute.

Oh dear! Your above comment is freaking me out a little! I HATE mice!

India doesn't really appeal to me. I think it's one of those places that I am happy to read about and see pictures of.

I haven't read the book. I wouldn't have pegged it as non-fiction...thanks for the heads-up.

I have never made caramel popcorn (not surprising, considering that I am very non-adventurous in the kitchen) but yours sounds amazing! Extra caramel? Mmmm!

I'm so excited for Jana! I forgot she was pregnant. So fun and how nice of Amy to make her a cute blanket.

I don't want to go to India either.

I am shocked that your mouse is still around. He must be a smarty-pants!

I don't know Jana at all but I am so happy she is getting a girl if she has 5 boys!

Book club looks fun as always. India is low on my list too. I've never really thought of it as a tourist destination I guess.

I would join Denise and eat caramel corn rather than travel to India so I guess I'm bad too. It's an interesting place full of culture and history but the thought of traveling that far to such an unknown place for me does not sound appealing. Like the lamp and the box!

I read most of that book. The jumping around got to me as well so I ended up skimming the 2nd half. I got the gist of it and it was enough for me.

Congrats to Jana!!

These book club reports make me so wistful. Especially if you made extra gooey caramel corn... can't remember the last time I had that. I should really make that more often!

Jana sent me an email the day of book club letting me know about her girl, so exciting!!

I am fascinated by India, but when I think about the crowds and the heat, I have to acknowledge that that does not sound like a very good fit for me.

I haven't quite finished the book yet, but I am loving it!

p.s. let me remind you that I stopped using the neck-crusher traps because the mice at my house were stealing the bait and then getting away! Those damn mice can be pretty sneaky.

I had no guilt getting an exterminator out pronto to poison, neck-break, whatever those mice. YUCK!

I have not read that book, that popcorn sounds yummy, and I would love to go to India although if given the choice I would go to Europe 1st. But who am I kidding-- I don't even have a passport!

I'm SO glad you feel that way about the Zookeeper's wife. I could not get into it and finally returned it to the library after several attempts and not getting past page 20!

No to all three of your questions...weird, huh? Now I am seriously craving some good caramel popcorn, though!

Your book club had some awesome discussion topics that is for sure! :)

I have to be in the right frame of mind for non-fiction and it still has to be entertaining.

Good luck with your mice....

so did you like the book? kind of??
I hear it is great...?

I have no desire to go to india- none.

book clubs are awesome! congrats to Janna! My friend janae has five girls & is having a boy soon-

I say kill em' fast- no heart here when it comes to rodents.

Travel to India has no appeal whatsoever.

The book is on my to-read list. I might get to it at some point.

I have never made caramel popcorn...that's almost embarrassing to admit.

i don't really have a desire to go to india either. i usually don't even like leaving my living room though, so maybe i'm not the best judge of that kind of thing. :)

did you know, that our very own blogger mom janae is having a BOY in january after FIVE GIRLS! how funny that her and jana are swapped. we're so excited in our little group, we can't even stand it!

I have a real hard time with non-fiction unless something interesting to me like health/fitness/cooking. I can handle a biography now and then, but most don't do anything for me. I haven't read that book and probably won't.

India would be amazing, yes, but I know that it is eye-opening and definitely not a luxury vacation. I just love the culture, food, etc. I would love to go to Nepal, India, Bangladesh, Cambodia, Vietnam, Singapore, etc. Maybe one day.

I love caramel popcorn. There's a reason I don't make it more often- I'd eat it all!

I don't like popcorn...unless it is covered in homemade carmel - then get a bowlful for me! I must hear more about the coupons....

I went to India in the Spring and LOVED IT. I felt very safe there. We had either a guide and a driver or one of my husbands Indian co-workers everywhere we went. I love the colors and the over the top decorations on buidings particularly the Red Fort that is near the Taj Mahal. We also had a 7 hour layover in Paris on the way home, so we jumped on a train and went to see Notre Dame and took a walk along the Seine.
