My Kind of Learning

Michelle and I were recently talking about the time she came to my house for Creative Friday and taught me how to make her grandmother's wonderful cream pies. I came across the photos recently and told her it was a long time ago because Eva was so little then, but both of us were shocked when I investigated further and found out that that lesson took place in November 2007!

I guess if I had really thought about it I would have realized that it had to have been several years ago because I've made those cream pies for the past three Thanksgivings (and will be doing so again this year).

The pies are now part of my repertoire and I'm very grateful I know how to make them. Of course it makes it just that much more special that Michelle taught me how and that she passed on some of her family's legacy of baking, which I can now pass onto mine (cue tears).

I love learning things from friends, and often think we all have such a wide variety of talents to share that we really should do something about that. Over these past few months Michelle has taught Amie, Crystal and I how to make her fabulous Artisan Bread, and then Amie taught us how to coupon (though I'm still such a beginner). But there are all kinds of things I'd like to learn how to do or to get better at doing (i.e., cooking, algebra, taxes, hair styling, fashion, exercise, speed reading and retention, photography, scripture study, life planning, etc.).

**What skills have you learned from friends?
Have you taught any of your skills?
What would you like to learn?**

Comment Window Tidbit: I'm feeling torn between the things I want to do, need to do, should do and so on. I hate feeling like my hours at home are limited by work and sleep. Aargh!

I want to learn to sew, knit, quilt . . . it's a dream of mine to take lessons one day when the kids are older.

I want to learn to sew well. Right now I am a beginner's beginner.

I would love to be very, very organized and have everything in it's place.

Most of my favorite recipes are from friends. Maybe they taste so good because they really are baked with love!

Oh, THAT day! I was thinking of the time we had C.F. at my house and it went on into the night when we decided to make pies. That was a good day. And so was the one in this post. Man, Eva was little.

I love the idea of people, especially women, teaching each other to do things. Amy taught me about book binding, Hannah taught me to knit, Jessie taught me how to get started on my embroidery projects, Kristi taught us how to make bags (although I'm not sure I remember), Amie taught us about couponing, you taught me about scrapbooking and card making and letter writing and photography. I bet there are even more that I can't think of right now. We all have things to teach each other, isn't that cool?

I have taught people to knit, quilt, cook, and wrap gifts.

I would love to learn more about photography, graphic design, sewing, hair styling, financial planning, organization, parenting, couponing, etc.

Your window comment reminds me of your review of Sister Beck's talk about essential, necessary, and nice to do earlier in the year. Work certainly makes its mark on time.

I often look at homeless people and think, "If we had an hour or two together I wonder what would you teach me." I love that we all have things to share with each other. I also enjoyed reading the list of things you'd like to learn.

Friends have taught me how to wallpaper, scrapbook, make tamales and tortillas, do crafts.

I love your photos. Michelle has the most beautiful hands, doesn't she?

This is a great post, and I had to laugh when you mentioned algebra because at the moment I am at the UVU library...reading blogs because I am stuck on my algebra homework. Ha!

i don't have any sweet skillz to pass on. i have to learn some so that i can at some point. :) scratch that. i make a mean chocolate chip cookie. and my boys WILL learn to do this by the time they leave home. :)

I remember this post. Really, 3 years ago? Time flies, Eva is tiny here.

I've had friends teach me to give, can, cook and sew. Not sure what I've taught others. Oh I have taught a few newlyweds to cut their husbands hair. Funny on my end that's for sure!

If it's friends spending time together I'm game to learn almost anything. Genealogy, photography, organizing my computer, goal setting/follow through. Much more.

Can you believe that I have never made a pie in my life?

I think having these things documented are going to be one of the treasures of blogging... if they are not already.

I think that is also the year we made pies on the phone with our headsets? I'm so glad Michelle shares her great recipes. We are loving the Artisan bread a little too much.

This is a lovely post!

My friends have taught me how to turn to others when times are tough, how to listen and how to talk, how to laugh and how to cry, how to study my scriptures, how to scrapbook, how to be "artsy" and love life more, how to blog, and more.

I have been blessed by wonderful friends--thank you for the reminder!

Learning to make pies is a real treat. I have never made one before because I don't know how and it seems too daunting. I told my MIL that for my bday gift from her I want her to teach me how to make her pies. She is famous for hers.

I did teach a coupon class to my RS. There are so many things I would love to learn, your comment window isn't big enough.

I made my mother's banana cream pie for Thanksgiving, too. Thankfully, however, Emily got the pie-crust-making gene from my mom and made the crusts for our pies. The last one I made tasted like tough chipboard.

I can teach people about work stuff. Fun times! Oh, and some city living things.

I remember that Creative Friday! Eva was so little, man.

I would like to learn about cleaning, math, business development...that's all I can think of right now.
