An Update

Michelle and I are having Creative Friday today (Saturday) so I'm taking the opportunity to use her computer to do a quick post and to check my email (both of these things are now luxuries). I've been doing okay and was able to work the rest of the week. The result of my blood work is that I have insanely low Iron...who knew? I hadn't been feeling run down or weird before the night of torture, so I think it's strange that this is the result. I don't have the paper with Iron and Ferritin totals on it here with me, but they were disturbingly low so the doctor has ordered I.V. treatments once a week for 4 weeks, then we'll retest things and go from there. The bummer is that I don't go in until next Tuesday after work, so I get to keep feeling this way. Things have been better the last few days, but I'm definitely NOT myself, still need the Ambien to stay asleep and often feel flushed with adrenaline. It's grim for sure and not something I would like to have to live with long term. Good times.

**Have you experienced this?**

My iron has been so low that I have been threatened with transfusions but my symptoms were different than yours. In any case, it must be a relief to have an answer. I have been checking back for an update.thanks for letting us know. Aren't bodies just amazing?! I know I never appreciate mine enough until something like this happens.

I think it is cruel to have to wait that long! I hope that this extra boost of Iron does the trick!
SO sorry you are feeling so off! Hopefully, this will lead to answers soon...

So glad to see an update from you. I am sorry that you are still not feeling good- but I am glad that you know what might be causing it. Hopefully you will be back to normal fast!

That stinks that you're still not feeling well, but I'm so thankful to hear that it's not something super seriously wrong. I hope you get feeling back to yourself soon! :)

I've missed your blog and hope that new iron will make you feel like a new woman.

Please say your doctor gave you a list of iron rich foods to go along with your prescription of IV.
Lists of iron rich foods are easily available online, and library books.
Michelle, maybe you can pass that along to Jill?
Also, consuming vitamin C rish foods with iron rich foods helps your body absorb the iron. I deal with my own anemia from time to time, so I know when I'm getting bogged down to up my iron.

Sorry, about the deleted comment. My daughter had logged into her account on my computer and I don't like to comment under her name.

What the comment said was:

My daughter (the same one) told me the other day that chewing ice is a symptom of anemia. I immediatly thought of you and your pebble ice adiction. And the, you turn out to have low iron! Do you chew your ice? It is so strange the many ways the body will manifest that some thing is out of balance.

I hope you will be feeling well again soon. I love your blog.

Glad to have an update. Feel better. Hang in there!

I really hope this IV Iron therapy works for you! I don't have low iron, but in January I had a physical and tested insanely low for Vitamin D. My DR prescribed taking 2000 units (2 pills) a day of Vit D for 2 months and then retesting. Which reminds me, I'd better go take them right now!

I really hope you feel better soon!!

So sad to hear that you are not well. Yes, I've suffered from low iron, but only experienced extreme fatigue, nothing at all like you are experiencing. Mine was caused by donating blood too often. Most people can donate every 8 weeks. I on the other hand can only handle a couple of times per year.

Prayers for you that you will get well very soon and that your doctor will figure out what caused it so it will never happen again!

I'm so sorry you feel like this. I currently am in a similar state...the only difference? I think my blood is fine. I'll keep you in my prayers.

I'm glad you got some answers and made it through the week. I hope the iron helps! I'm on the other end and have "high" iron... the blood taker is usually surprised. I'm going to attribute it to cooking in cast iron and not my diet.

Keep us posted when you can!

I experienced low iron this past summer- it was a terrible time in my life and I am thankful I have gotten my levels back up. I will keep you in my prayers! Hopefully it will all turn around for you quickly!

Good grief--so much has happened since I dropped out of the blogging world! Your symptoms sound heinous! I don't know which is worse, the non-sleeping or the lack of motivation. Here's hoping you're back to yourself again soon!

I'll keep you in my prayers.

Glad to see a small update on how you are doing? Glad they found something wrong and can treat you. Hope this makes a difference in how you sleep really soon. Wishing and praying the best for you!

I hope the iv works for you and you get that darn computer fixed. It is weird to not have your daily posts. Good luck!

Oh I am glad they found something to treat and hopefully get you feeling back to normal soon!! Low iron can make you feel horrible (I have never heard of it causing the symptoms you have...but glad they have found the reason!!!)

Thinking of you!!!

This seriously sucks for all of us!! I miss your daily posts too and I'm soooo sorry about the iron deficiency. Who knew it could cause those kinds of problems?

missy you have to be grateful that this has come at a time when you have insurance, deficiency in iron is very dangerous, you can have a heart attack missy! I was just talking to my friend, she had a miscarriage and ended up with a hemorrhage and lost soo much blood that she actually went into cardiac arrest. She had to be with someone one for like 48 hours, because if she passed out, that would probably be it....It is a good time to see what your diet is, and to analyze what imperative things you should and have to add to your lifestyle, working out, eating balanced and often. Foods that are high on iron should be pretty easy to incorporate on your diet, and maybe it is time to toss that carnation breakfast....after all it is the MOST IMPORTANT MEAL of the day!--i am only saying this, because i am not so HIGH on vitamins and stuff you can swallow....i rather eat it!, because it is imperative that you have what is needed...believe me, your body will CHANGE at 40 and if you are not on top of it, it will take you on a wild ride! I am glad you have pinned point it, and it is one thing when your body gives you a warning that things are not okay, and another to ignore it and keep going.....OHHH MY!

Gese, Louise, Jill! When it rains, it pours for sure! I'm glad you've got a diagnosis, but I must admit, I never saw that one coming!
Hang in there...things can only get better from here, right?

I am anemic, but never to the point of needing IV treatments. Get some stool softner, you're gonna need it! (Sad but true)

I am a life long insomniac, so I live on sleeping only with sleep aids. Its just something I've come to terms with. I hope the panicky feelings will go away.

Becky said...

I'm praying that you are feeling better and that all went well today with your IV!

Rachel said...

Suck. I am so sorry Jill. The IVs will be inconvenient, but I am glad to hear that it's nothing incredibly serious. Hang in there. :)

jenn said...

I.V. treatments?!! That sounds serious enough- sheesh! I hope they help. I have been thinking about you a lot!

melanie said...

My mom has had to do this for years. It really helps her. I hope it does for you too. The only thing she hated was getting the IV done at a cancer center where people were getting chemo and she had to tell them she was getting iron. Made her feel much healthier.

Thinking of you!
