What The?

We have always considered it one of our best blessings that our kids very rarely get sick. Even when they do get sick, it's usually so minor that it's barely a blip on the radar. But this time has been different and both kids ended up coming down with the bad cold (fever, headache, cough, runny nose) that's been going around (the junior high sounds like a TB ward so I'm practically O.C.D. about washing my hands).

It has been so strange to have them home and out of it since last Wednesday! We thought they were on the mend when they surfaced for Bella's birthday/game night Saturday night, but we kept them home from church yesterday and were surprised when they ended up staying pretty mellow, taking naps and going to bed early. We thought they'd be ready to go back to school today (with a cough and runny nose), but they were both in bad shape again this morning. It is just crazy that they missed 4 days of school! These are the first days Landon has missed all year!

This was the set up from Wednesday morning until Saturday...we blew up the air mattress for Whitney, made a bed on the couch for Landon, hung blankets over the curtains to reduce the glare on the TV, had boxes of tissues, blankets, water bottles and a bowl nearby just in case (luckily it didn't end up being that kind of sickness).

I spent several hours on Saturday disinfecting everything, washing blankets and pillow cases and airing out the house before hosting a family party, but it looks like I'm going to need to do all of that again.

I found this note on the counter today (apparently Whitney drew it for Randy yesterday) and think it's hilarious that she took the time to draw this rather than just filling up her own water bottle! I think she has enjoyed having us wait on her while she's been sick.

The kids have spent 99% of their time watching movies on TV and sleeping, but Landon finally felt well enough to sit up and read today. For me the only good thing about being sick is reading in the cozy, apparently the kids haven't grasped the beauty of that yet.

This afternoon Whitney was sitting on one of the bar stools while I was in the kitchen, then I looked over and she was gone. I found her lying on the floor because it was too exhausting to sit up! She actually sat up to hide when I grabbed my camera, but it was pretty funny to see her randomly sprawled on the dining room floor.

The hamsters are nocturnal so they're quite noisy as they eat and run in their wheels during the night. Usually the kids don't mind, but since sleep is such a big deal right now we've been moving the cages to the laundry room for the night. I like the hamsters, but this is not my favorite thing.

I apologize for another riveting post from the house of sick. I may have to stop blogging if something interesting doesn't happen soon, this is ridiculous!

**Have you been sick recently?
Do your kids miss much school?
Do you disinfect like crazy?
Do you like to read when you're sick?**

Comment Window Tidbit: I read out loud to the kids this afternoon for 3.5 hours! That is totally unprecedented! We read the 2nd half of Zombikins and the entire last Diary of a Wimpy Kid book (I laughed so hard I cried).

Rough times over there! I am so sorry to hear that the kids have been sick for so long. I hope they are better by tomorrow- let me know if we need to figure something else out for tomorrow night, ok?

Can I do anything for you? I can make dinner and bring it tomorrow when I come. Anything else you need?

Other than Ashley's cough we haven' been too sick this winter, thankfully.

I love to read when I am sick, if I am well enough. Otherwise it's all about the sleep.

That is quite a sick ward you have set up. All you need is white shoes and a white nurse hat.

Ohhhhh, I'm so glad you read aloud to them. What a great compensation for being sick.

What a month for you Jill - seriously. My boys were sick for about two months - with gastro and fevers. Then I was, then my husband was, then my girls - it just kept coming at us. I hope that everyone can get better soon - at least for sanity sakes! And yes, I totally disinfect.

I'm so sorry your kids have been so sick! Be grateful it wasn't the stomach bug!

Poor kids. This sounds so miserable. It is rare for your kids to be so sick. I hope they are feeling better today. I heard that this bug lasts 9 days.

This winter has been our healthiest year to date. I haven't had to take Ryan in once which is an absolute miracle.

My kids only miss school if we go to dland. Other than that it is a day here or there. Not much.

I do disinfect like crazy especially if someone is throwing up. But we haven't even had that yet.

We have not been real sick this year. More like little stuff that doesn't go away. Kelly and I both had sore throats for a month. Ethan's nose runs every morning but he has full energy...

I love to read when I'm sick. Not as much as I love to read and NOT be sick, but it is a minor compensation for being down.

I enjoy reading the Wimpy Kid booKs to Griffin too.

I am sick throwing up today. Just sent a pitiful text to my neighbor asking for Emetrol and ginger ale.

I love that Whitney still maintains her sense of humor.

Oh dear, oh dear. I'm sorry you have had to experience this.

As you know, this is a fairly frequent occurrence at my house. I walk around spraying Lysol on the furniture and wiping down remotes and stuff all the time. My kids miss altogether too much school.

When I'm sick, I dream of staying in bed all day and reading. It rarely happens, though. My kids hardly ever read or nap when they're sick. Lots of tv/videos. I hope Landon and Whitney are back in business soon!

We were all sick the beginning of February. I think another round of coughing is making its way into our family again, just in time for April. Thankfully the kids have missed very little school. Laundry and bedding get washed even more than usual, everything gets Lysoled daily. Hand sanitizer makes the rounds several times a day at random.

Is that too much? lol

Jaclyn is on spring break and she is sick, which is a rotten way to spend her school break, but at least she's not missing school, I guess.
You are awesome to read aloud to your kids for so long - I love your commitment to literacy and that you can share something you love with your kids that way.

I am jealous of you laughing so hard you cried! That's the best.

Sick kids are groove-busting. It's nice that yours are mellow and relaxed and seemingly quiet while they are down and out. I hope you don't get it next! Love how Whitney embraces being waited on.

Are you able to stay home easily when they are sick at least?
I still can't believe that you like the hamsters. Have you tried to hold them??
Reading aloud for 3.5 hours is intense.
And Whitney's note cracked me up.

Oh, I wish I had someone to take care of me when I'm sick! Children, enjoy it while you can!
