Please Help!

I am in charge of the Treat Rotation at Whitney's class' Halloween Party on Friday and I am at a loss. There are lots of great ideas out there, but I have to work with these 2 parameters-- it can't be homemade (school policy) and I need it to be inexpensive...not a good combo.

These are some of the ideas I've found online and am mentally trying to modify to fit my needs.

These spider legs are held inside with peanut butter, but I think that's a risky move with so many peanut allergy sufferers these days (I guess that means I have a 3rd parameter to work around). Maybe cream cheese or spreadable cheese would work, but would the kids want to eat like 50 of them? There are 26 kids in the class.

I was thinking that the marshmallow head part of this might be fun for them to make and then eat (no cupcake) but would that be lame? I should probably check with Whitney. I have 15 minutes for the Treat Rotation, so this would keep them busy.

I think this googly eye is rather funny, but how could I do it without the cupcake?

Would something like this be too boring? I'd probably need a ton of it, plus what would we do while we ate it? It won't take 15 minutes to eat a handful of this.

I am very well-intentioned and good natured about these class parties, but I find myself severely idea challenged so I need YOU! I'm open to pretty much anything that fits into my parameters so please give me your ideas.

You could use cans of frosting for the spiders instead of peanut butter or cheese. Get vanilla and chocolate, then they can choose!

I despise this "no home made snacks" BS policy schools keep adopting. Foul words get flung towards this policy.

for the eye ball cupcake, what if you went to the bakery at a grocery store and asked them to bake 24 cupcakes without frosting for you. Then you would be set to make the rest at school with store bought frosting and pupil part!
Don't know if that would be too expensive, but just a suggestion.
I think one year I brought Ritz crackers with squirty cheese and you could have them decorate the cracker with cheese- like a ghost or pumpkin. The kids actually really liked eating it!
good luck and can't wait to hear what you end up doing!
happy hauntings!

what about no-fire smores? take in graham crackers, pick up a bag of hershey miniatures, a jar or two of marshmallow fluff and let them assemble their own smores. they might really get into being able to use the different types chocolate bars.

the great thing about kids is that they get excited about just about any kind of treat, so they won't be nearly as judgmental as us 'grown-ups'. have fun!!

I sent you an e-mail with an idea link...

P.S. I'm sweating!!! I'm seriously considering turning on the A/C! What's up with all of this crazy weather!?
Did you hear about the 24 tornados in 24 states?

Fudge stripe cookie (the round kind with chocolate on one side) turned upside down, dollop of frosting in the middle and a hershey's kiss on top to look like a witches hat. You could go all out and make a green hat band out of fruit roll up, but why?

What about the classic tootsie roll w/ a kleenex over the top, string tied at neck to make a ghost?

Do i have ideas...no, but remember when class parties were just parties, and you could bring whatever you wanted and there were no 'rotations'? And it was just a fun day because it was a party and you got to eat in your classroom and talk to your friends?

Seriously.

My sister had many a panic attack planning this kind of stuff. The budget, the rules, the time limits. Good luck, Chuck.

My idea is very similar to your last one there. I've made carmel popcorn with candy corns in it before for halloween.

I say go with Kelly's ideas...either one. Easy and genious. Although, might be costly. Tootsie pops are pretty cheap...so go with the ghosts. What kid wouldn't like that?

You could use the top idea but use and oreo cookie instead of a peanut butter cracker. You could use pull n peel licorice for the legs

first of all I just want to say
NO to your snow! NO, NO, NO!

there now on to this...

They seem easy enough, great impact (a bowl of eyes), and fairly cheap for a alot of them!

I'm going to keep checking back because it looks to me like you've got a lot of great ideas!

You DO have some hard perimeters to work with.

One treat I've discovered that is inexpensive in comparison to hand out for Halloween is pop. It's true. Those little candy bars are ten cents each but a store brand can of pop is only about 15 cents and it weighs a whole lot more and takes up a whole lot more room and SEEMS big. Or, if you pour it from a 58 cent liter then it's even cheaper, so you could make mini orange floats and then play a game with your fifteen minutes.

I like the witch hat idea. Walmart's imitation fudge stripe cookies are only a dollar and one pack would be enough...

I hate the no homemade thing.... it seems like I saw an idea I wanted to try but now I am drawing a blank... if I think of it and it was cheap and not homemade I will come back....

man, good ideas! I wish I had one for you, but I can't think of anyting.

Is it funny that all those gross looking treats look really good to my right now?!

You could do the kleenex thingy with dum dums- those are really cheap & the kids could maybe make more than one that way...?

sorry I've been such a lame commenter lately- so sorry.
NO excuses, I am just lame these days.

good luck- I like all the ideas.
Oh wait I just thought of another one-- my neighbor makes popcorn balls just like rice crispy treats (melted marshmellow & popcorn instead of rice crispies) maybe you could have the kids make those, if you had a hot plate or something. It would be messy but you could bring an airpopper & they could get gloves from the lunch room.. it would take up all of your time. You could use orange food coloring & they could make them into pumpkins? just a thought.

I like the marshmellow head thing.

I saw a really cute idea at my gym Spooktacular on Saturday. They made apple sundaes. Basically just cut up apples and let the kids put various toppings on like caramel, mini marshmellows, strawberry syrup, chocolate syrup, sprinkles, etc. Everything had a spooky name. It was really really cute but could possibly be expensive.

I have read your blog without commenting for a long time. (please forgive me! I am still learning to put myself out there and let my light shine, I guess :) I just could not sit by without offering some help on this one. I feel your pain.

Ugh...I despise the "No Homemade Treat" rule. Seriously...is a parent going to take the time to make something homemade and then, what...poison it? So, we trust the store more than the parents? I think any parent who cares enough to bring a homemade treat also cares enough to make sure it is safe and clean for the kids to eat.

Anyway....here are a few ideas I found:

This first one could be made as-is, or modified to have a marshmallow Ghost on top instead of a skull (I have purchased the candy sticks at various places before for just 10 cents a stick, and then you'd only need a bag of marshmallows and mini chocolate chips for ghost-eyes, if you went the Ghost route) :

http://www.marthastewart.com/photogallery/candy-creatures#slide_3

You could buy any dark-colored cookies and put marshmalow skulls or ghosts on top, similar to this:

This looks fun! Claims to be inexpensive, too, though I have no idea if that is true:

Little pretzel brooms:

Good luck! I know you'll come up with something fantastic and fun. :)

I vote the marshmallow head that they make & then eat. Kids would love creating a Frankenstein marshmallow head!

I have made those spiders using oreo cookies or chocolate mini donuts and sticking the legs into them.

My favorite part of this post...the tag at the end that said:

I LOVE IT! Teehee.

Wow, you got some good ideas here! I was going to suggest the Oreo substitution as well. Perhaps you could have the kids assemble the popcorn mix and then do something else while eating it? That's all I got.

Love your blog--sorry I never comment, but I just might start!!

Our school can't even have a Halloween party...it has to be a "Fall Party"--with muffins and apple juice.

I love your label today - Bloggers of the world unite and I should call Kristi... Did you?

Looks like you have a lot to go from on these comments. I personally LOVE the no homemade food. Honestly - there are some homes that I would cringe if they brought food into the classroom.

You can make popcorn at the school if you have an airpopper.. let it cool. WIthout adding butter or anything have the little people stuff latex clear cleaning gloves with a candy corn for the nails and the fill the rest with popcorn. Tie it with a ribbon or string. That is something they can bring home and eat later.
I love the inexpensive but fun idea of the dum dums and making ghosts... I think that if you have the money to swing PLAIN cupcakes - everyone loves to decorate cupcakes or plain sugar cookies. You just need to call you grocery store TODAY and place an order for pick up later tonight or first thing in the morning.

Good luck...take photos! :-)
