Babystepping to Christmas

The Saturday after Thanksgiving was beautiful and 50 degrees. Randy and I did the final raking of leaves (which were surprisingly plentiful) and decorating the outside of the house; it's nice to hang the garlands on the fence before it gets freezing outside. Too bad we ran out of steam before we got the lights on the roof though!

I was so happy to have the next Tuesday off of work because I was finally able to get our Advent stocking tree organized for the kids. Michelle made these darling stockings for us a few years ago and I've never been on top of things enough to use them. It took me quite awhile to come up with the activities to put on the slips to put in the stockings (apparently I'm challenged). I had the calendar out so I could coordinate the dates of the activities so the more involved stuff happens on the weekends or Monday nights.

I put an activity in each one and a small candy for each of the kids.

This is the mini tree the stockings hang on, so cute.

Saturday was super snowy and we stayed in all day. Randy picked up some pizza for lunch (stuffed crust!) and we finally decorated the tree and the inside of the house.

The kids are getting huge.

Our tree is has the homespun look for sure, but we love it.

It was the perfect activity for a snowy day at home.

At one point Whitney was upset and channeled her anger into this lovely Christmas wish list...no it's not driving us crazy at all. Good times.

Escalante Trip--Day 4 the End

Waking up on our last morning was less relaxing because we knew we had to clean up to go home and we wanted to do so by 10:00am...how did the time go so quickly?

It was a beautiful morning with this gorgeous view out from the kitchen.

It really is such a nice house. It was luxurious for all of us to have our own room while we were there.

Farewell kitchen full of snack goodness!

We planned one last outing which was to see Devil's Garden. It meant driving 15 miles down a dirt road then turning right at this sign.

Apparently the Devil's Garden looks like the bottom of the ocean! It was full of these amazingly ginormous rocks, caverns and scrub brush, it truly felt like we were walking along the bottom of a drained ocean.

Crazy no?

Of course Michelle did her rock climbing in style!

Check out the reflection in my glasses!

I had never seen anything like this place before!

After that stop we broke out the rest of the fabulous caramel popcorn my mom had made for us, this big hunk looked like Africa.

We drove home a different route from the way we came and as we made our way back into real-time we traversed all kinds of landscapes.

We stopped at a couple scenic look-outs including one that must rival the Grand Canyon.

We stopped in Boulder for lunch.

We were too late to get their fabulous breakfast (Amie had told us about) but we were all happy with our lunch choices. I had the best BLT of my life!

We also drove past the cutest post office ever!

Amie's husband and kids were on Boulder Mountain hunting for the weekend, so we stopped in the mud to visit them. Only Amie was brave enough to walk through the crazy thick mud, so we just waved to the kids (Jimmy was sleeping in the trailer).

There was snow on the mountain!

Amie and I turned our cameras on each other.

The mountain views were so beautiful that Michelle took pictures from the car window.

We had just been in the desert so it was super weird to be on a mountain in the snow!

Beautiful!

And then it was back to red rocks on desert views...crazy.

I came home to this sweet note from Whitney.

I also came home to a new hamster! I knew they were going to get one while I was gone, but it was still a surprise to come home to a new member of the family. "Rino" looks like a fluffy little mouse but with a hamster tail. He's so light that he feels weightless.

**Ever seen anything like Devil's Garden?**
Comment Window Tidbit: The Headache book has suggested peanuts/peanut butter as a possible trigger for my headaches...I eat a peanut butter sandwich every day at work! Hello!

Not My Favorite View

I usually enjoy the view from my kitchen window, but today I returned home from work to find a Porta-Potty places across the street from my house and out my kitchen window. I suppose I should be glad it isn't directly in front of our house, but it's pretty dang close. They are doing major road construction down the street from us so apparently this is now a designated rest room for the workers. I fear we'll be looking at this for a long time. If it's still here for the holidays we may need to put some tinsel on it. Randy always said we'd live like kings. (Name the movie.)

**Thoughts??**

Comment Window Tidbit: I'm not ready for my trip, I have way too much to do but all I want to do right now is get in my jammies and watch "Survivor" with Randy.

Sunday Thoughts

We had great talks at church today, which I thoroughly enjoyed even though we were doing time on the hard fold-out chairs. Every week Randy and the kids (and sometimes me) get to church at least 20 minutes early in order to get a soft seat on the pews up front (usually the 4th or 5th row on the left side of the room), but even though they got there early today we didn't get a soft seat! Oh my poor tail bone!

Here are some of my notes:
--We teach the gospel in our homes, when we're visiting teaching or home teaching and as we live as examples to others.
--Teaching in the home is a sacred responsibility.
--Sometimes the "seeds" we plant may not bear fruit for years.
--Having Family Home Evening each week is crucial.
--Children learn from having family prayer. They learn the language of prayer, they learn to have faith, they learn to be obedient, and they learn to feel God's love.
--If we are vigilant at looking for little signs of trouble in our homes we will be able to solve problems before they get out of control.
--Teach repentance.
--Teach by example, be doers of the word not hearers only.
--The Savior was always teaching and showed genuine love and understanding as He taught.

Comment Window Tidbit: I did class visits during both hours of primary today and caught a 4 year old as he snuck out of primary and made a run to find his mother.

Long Journey Home

Even though the really picturesque part of my Paris trip is over, I still have to document my return home. You see, whenever I fly somewhere I feel like it is so much more than just getting from point A to point B, and it often involves life-sucking energy withdrawls, strange smells (depending on who I'm seated by) and the Jimmy leg, so it's no wonder that the super power I dream of most is teleportation.

I'm really not keen on getting up super early in the morning, but my flight was at 9:25am and Michelle said they're notoriously slow at the airport so I shouldn't risk leaving any later than 6:30am. Aye carumba! Michelle had ordered my taxi the night before and the driver was right on time, but he didn't seem very happy about it. He didn't say one word to me the entire drive! (My taxi driver 11 days earlier had pointed out all kinds of things along the drive and warned me of pick pockets.)

I didn't feel the need to chat either, but the lack of talking amplified the strangeness of the situation. Here I was in a foreign country relying on a complete (and unfriendly) stranger to take me to the airport, I really don't want to think about all the things that could have gone wrong there.

What made the drive even weirder was that I kept hearing an odd noise. It seemed to occur at regular intervals though so I couldn't figure out what it was. I finally decided it sounded like snoring and began to wonder if he had a baby in the front seat of the car (which I sitting directly behind). I was intrigued.

As we pulled up to the terminal, I saved us from getting hit by a woman backing out of a parking spot (the driver had been looking at the terminal) by letting out a yelp, which he did NOT thank me for doing. I think I deserved some sort of discount for that, but hey he didn't abduct or murder me so I let it go. The ride this time was 4 euros more expensive because he had started the meter as soon as he pulled up at the apartment; I guess that's good incentive to get there early eh? I barely had enough cash to pay him, which meant he didn't get a tip...oops.

Upon getting out of the car I peeked into the front seat expecting to see a car seat and was surprised to see a little black dog (sort of Boxer looking) asleep on the front seat!

The airport was pretty empty at that hour and they had lots of helpful people directing clueless travelers where to go, so I checked in within 10 minutes of arriving at the airport...not too shabby.

Things were moving quickly through security as well so I was all set and in the terminal by 7:30am. It was nice not to have to worry about anything. I was able to get a couple croissants for breakfast and read my book for awhile.

I had forgotten to mail my postcards while leaving the apartment, and had seen a poste drop-off box in the airport, but it turns out there aren't any mail drops after going through security! So I had this big stack of postcards and had paid .85 for each stamp on them and really wanted to mail them. I thought about asking one of the terminal's store employees to help me out, but didn't think that seemed like a very French thing to do. It turns out I'm not French! I went into one of the stores (a liquor store with no customers) and asked the woman working there if there was a poste box nearby (even though I knew there wasn't) then she actually volunteered to mail my postcards for me! That's not a very French thing to do either, but she said she does it all the time. I was delighted, and must say that other than my taxi driver every French person I dealt with was pretty nice.

Isn't this terminal cool looking? It was very clean and modern in there. It was missing bathrooms though (what the?) so I had to wander around for awhile before finding one for my last on-land visit (I never go when I fly).

My plane boarded on time and I got to the seat first, which was nice because I was able to get all situated without bothering my twin (I mean seat neighbor). I scored with my seat neighbor, he was a nonsmelly, nonchatty, man in his 50's of normal size so there was no oozing into my seat or leg bumping going on between us. He was friendly without telling me about it.

I was able to sleep for a lot of the flight (though it was that choppy, in and out of consciousness kind of sleep) but that made the time go faster. I was awake for lunch and to see Land of the Lost which is a dumb movie, but still made me laugh. ("Chaka, did you say Chorizo tacos? Don't even mess with me because I am super hungry.")

I felt a little twinge of patriotism when the woman who stamped my passport at Customs said, "Welcome Home."

I wheeled my bags out to the curb and waited for my mom, who it turns out was down the way waiting for me and had left a message on my cell phone, but I hadn't brought my cell phone with me. I sat and read for 10 minutes then decided to walk down further just in case she was parked further down and she was. Oh well.

We stopped at JCW's for a late lunch (I was starving) and I must say that a burger has never tasted better in my life!

I walked in the door and was greeted by Landon and Whitney and Madison and Taylor (it was a Monday and they come over after school on Mondays). Whitney had gone all out on her Welcome Home signs and cracked me up with the details on them.

Randy and I figure this one was just an excuse to draw animals.

Randy had even gotten me a fresh bag of pebble ice!

It was good, yet strange to be home after such a great trip. I ended up unpacking and doing laundry right away because I needed to make myself stay awake until night time. Luckily I felt really good and made it until 9:00pm that night. I went to bed early like that for the rest of the week and never experienced any of that terrible jet lag like I had last time I came home from Paris.

**Did you make it through this post?
Do you think traveling is an ordeal?
What food would you miss most?**

Comment Window Tidbit: Never fear, I replenished my B vitamins today and am in good form. I have been struck by a great desire to shop (don't tell Randy) and don't know where that came from. I can't put up much of a fight when the money's not there, but still.
