12 on the 12th--July Edition

{Click to Enlarge}

  1. I had a piece of vanilla cream birthday pie (made by Michelle) for breakfast.
  2. I reread Elder Oaks' talk about Strengths Becoming Weaknesses.
  3. I went to the temple (it was super busy since the Provo Temple is closed).
  4. I came home to find Landon and Austin playing a game on the laptop.
  5. My mom brought Whitney home from a sleepover.
  6. They had sewed this outfit for the D.I. bunny they recently got on an outing. (It even has a cutout in the pants for the tail.)
  7. The kids had dentist appointments (Whitney had a cavity).
  8. I started a new book (Until The Real Thing Comes Along) at the dentist's office (and finished it at 1:30am when I couldn't sleep).
  9. Whitney and I went to Costco and ran into my mom there, which is funny because it's a huge store and we had been at the dentist's for over an hour.
  10. Our Costco purchases.
  11. When Robyn picked up Austin she left me a gift certificate for a pedicure for my birthday, woohoo!
  12. I watched "So You Think You Can Dance" since I'd missed the night before for bookclub.

Brownies for Sale

Landon and Austin have caught the entrepreneurial spirit and have taken it to the streets. Yesterday they sold cupcakes while at Austin's house, and today they sold brownies (they made themselves) in front of our house.

They were out there waving madly at the cars passing by and weren't having much success, until they made signs (per my suggestion) that said, "Brownies" and actually cut the brownies and put them on a plate (they originally just had them in the pan).

I took this picture from the kitchen window as they had 2 cars/customers at the same time! One of these old guys asked them if they were going to pay tithing on their profits...Landon has already set his aside.

Isn't doing this a quintessential part of childhood?

They were out there for 2 hours, and they made $4.41 each.

One woman gave them $2 just because they were working hard. That's just plain nice.

Later in the day, they walked down to the SnoCone Shack and bought their own treats, I'm sure those were the best they ever had.

**Do you buy from kid entrepreneurs?
What did you sell when you were a kid?**

Comment Window Tidbit: Whitney is on a 3 day sleepover (one night with my mom and the cousins, then two nights with the cousins) and it's amazing how much cleaner and quieter the house is. I'm probably going to get twitchy after a day or so, but for now it's nice.

Five (plus one) for Friday

1. I went visiting teaching on Tuesday morning and gave my ladies these Halloween goodies. I was also in charge of giving the message and talked about this quote from the monthly message.

Margaret D. Nadauld, former Young Women general president: "Women of God can never be like women of the world. The world has enough women who are tough; we need women who are tender. There are enough women who are coarse; we need women who are kind. . . . We have enough women of fame and fortune; we need more women of faith" ("The Joy of Womanhood," Liahona, Jan. 2001, 18; Ensign, Nov. 2000, 15).

It was particularly meaningful coming on the heels of the fantastic funeral last weekend. I feel such a strong desire to be a woman of faith.

2. I had Whitney put on her new baptism dress so I could take pictures for her baptism invitations and was once again reminded of how much harder it is to get great pictures of my own kids, as opposed to taking them of other people's kids, but it was still fun. (This is NOT the picture we will be using.)

3. The wedding I took pictures for last weekend was held at a park behind Lisa's (yes, my often-missing friend Lisa) house so I was able to visit with her for the first time in a long, long while. Since I had her in person, I got all her updated info (cell phone number, addresses and so on) and made plans to get together with her and Amie on Monday for lunch. We got Cafe Rio take out and went to Lisa's house to eat and chat for a few hours. They weren't happy to pose for a picture, but of course I made them do it anyway. This was our 4th or 5th attempt, hence the tears of laughter in our eyes.

4. I am so sick of our yard looking like crap. This is the first year I didn't plant a single flower; I gave up before I even started. I think it's because Randy was unemployed when spring arrived so I didn't feel free to spend $100 on flowers the way I normally do, but I also felt frustrated because last year's flowers didn't do very well. Now the beds need to be cleared for fall, the soil amended and bulbs planted, but I don't know when that's going to get done or by who. I don't want to do it, I just want it to be done. Is that so wrong?

{Austin caught air while playing 2 square!}

5. Landon and Austin invited me to play football with them in the yard the other day, and I'm happy to say that my immediate response was "I can do that." (All too often I have a moment of dread or a delayed reaction as I listen to the little people arguing on each of my shoulders.) We ended up playing 2 square instead of football and had such a good time.

I was a 4 square champion the same years I was a kickball rock star, so though these skills have lain dormant for about 27 years I still possess them. I think the boys were equally impressed and amazed. We played for about an hour, and when Lori came over she joined us and we played 4 square. We got downright giggly as we played, it was just too funny. Good times!

6. I went to see the movie "Ghost Town" with my sisters on Wednesday night and it proved to be an ab workout for me. We laughed so hard and so loud I feared we were causing a scene! I think I missed some of the follow-up funny going on in the movie because I was laughing so hard I couldn't see or hear anymore (tears, squinting, guffaws and such). I love it when that happens.

**Have you done your visiting teaching yet?
Do you ever lose track of friends?
Do you have yard work to do?
When was the last time you played 2 square?
Have you seen Ghost Town?**
